Co-operative Bank: Consumers get ethical

New research from the Co-operative Bank has shown that an increasing number of Brits (61 per cent) are considering ethical issues when they do their shopping.

The area where most shoppers are influenced by ethics is food and drink, where 60 per cent take the issue into consideration.

Meanwhile 25 per cent of customers buying cosmetics, 21 per cent of those purchasing clothing and 17 per cent of people shopping for cleaning products also take ethical factors into account.

The bank's survey also revealed that the ethical topic of most concern for shoppers is the use of plastic bags, followed by fair-trade and animal testing.

In terms of ethical finance, the Co-operative offers a credit card called 'think' which rewards customers who shop ethically.

Maxine Xodo, product manager for the 'think' credit card, said: "With a much wider selection of ethical options than ever before, customers now have the option to make choices, which can really make a difference."

Consumers can also choose to buy 'ethical' cars nowadays such as Ford's new ECOnetic, which is set to be launched at the Co-operative Bank's green car show.
