Tesco: Carrot not stick needed for green motorists

Tesco is arguing that the government should incentivise motorists to opt for a green car, rather than punishing them for not doing so.

According to its research, two million people already claim to drive an eco-friendly car, but over 21 million would consider going for a low-emission vehicle is the price was more competitive and the government offered incentives.

It also found that eight per cent of the over-55s own a green car, compared to four per cent of those under 34.

Meanwhile, drivers in Wales and the south-west are three times as likely to purchase an eco-friendly motor as those in London.

Paul Baxter, a spokesperson for Tescocompare.com, said: "The message that the British driver is sending to the Government is empathetic - they are happy to embrace green driving but want to be rewarded for doing so."

The Co-operative Bank is running a Sexy Green Car Show from the May 23rd - 31st, at which Ford's new ECOnetic car will be launched.
