Abbey savings rates reduced

Abbey has announced that it will reduce the rates on a number of its variable savings accounts by 0.25 per cent, following the Bank of England's base rate cut of the same amount.

Rates on its Instant Access Saver, ESaver Direct, 50 Plus Saver ,and Super 50 Plus accounts will all remain the same.

The changes will be effective from May 1st.

Reza Attar-Zadeh, director of savings and investment at Abbey, commented: "We believe this is a time when people should be looking to the future and committing to a strong savings plan."

"Today is a very competitive market, and Abbey is committed to ensuring we have the best deals - regardless of market conditions," she added.

Savings expert Emma Byrne recently suggested that saving is becoming a priority again for young people as the credit card and student debts pile up.
