Halifax Home Insurance reports rise in bike theft

Halifax Home Insurance has found that one bike is stolen every 65 seconds in the UK, which is an increase of last year's average of one every 71 seconds.

Despite the high rate of theft and the fact that the average cost of replacing a stolen bike is £337, the bank states that few people report the incident to the police, making it more difficult for them to claim on their home insurance.

According to its data bike thieves are most prolific in London, with four of the capital's boroughs coming in the top ten theft hotspots, while Bristol, Gloucester and Oxford also come high on the list.

The bank recommends taking simple steps, such as fitting a U-type lock to an unattended bicycle, to avoid becoming a victim of theft.

David Rochester, head of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "With the majority of thefts affecting bikes which have been placed under lock and key, it may be worth considering spending a little more money for a high security lock."

In other news from Halifax, its latest house price index recorded a 1.3 per cent drop in prices in April.
