In addition, more than one in ten (12 per cent) would replace item simply because the fuse had blown.
The insurer's study also revealed that 25 to 34-year olds are the most likely to throw away broken household items, with 91 per cent admitting to doing so, while residents in the south of England are the most likely to do away with their faulty goods.
Ruth Wilkins, head of communications at Legal & General's general insurance business, said: "With environmental issues increasingly on the public agenda, it is surprising that such a large number of us are still choosing to replace our household goods and possessions rather than try to repair them."
Commenting on interest rates last week, Legal & General predicted that it is "just a matter of time before the next quarter cut".
