CPI inflation hits 3%

Consumer price index (CPI) inflation has risen to three per cent, according to the latest data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS).

It found that the largest contributor to the increase in the CPI annual rate came from household services, due to the rising price of gas, electricity and heating oil.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages also played a part in pushing up inflation, particularly meat, fruit, bread, cereals and fish, as did computer games and furnishings.

The biggest downward force on the CPI rate came from transport costs, the ONS said, mainly due to air transport, fuels, and lubricants. Air fares fell in April, particularly on European flights.

This latest rise may influence the Bank of England's next interest rate decision, although the body predicted in February that inflation would rise sharply.
