Abbey Credit Cards: Parents feel half-term holiday pinch

According to new research from Abbey Credit Cards, parents heading off abroad with their offspring this half term could be hit with premiums of up to 80 per cent.

Hotels and travel agents typically hike their prices during the school holidays and half terms are no exception, although Scottish parents can expect to pay less as their children's breaks typically fall before those of other UK schoolchildren.

Abbey has found that Spain is the most cost-effective option for British parents during the half-term break, with an average holiday costing £348 per family member for a half-board stay in a four star hotel.

A comparable break in Cyprus would cost £439 or £553 in the Algrarve.

Callum Gibson, head of Abbey Credit Cards, commented: "There are a number of ways to keep costs down on foreign holidays such as booking in advance, shopping around for the best price on foreign currency [or] taking a credit card on holidays that saves you money on foreign exchange fees."

Earlier this week Abbey announced that it has launched a new trio of bonds - a fixed-rate, 50-plus and children's savings bond.
