AA Insurance warning for mobile-using drivers

Car insurance firms are clamping down on mobile phone driving violations by increasing offenders' premiums or even refusing cover, according to the AA.

In a survey of eight insurance companies it was discovered motorists who have been caught chatting behind the wheel by police face a likely increase in premiums from 4.2 per cent to 18.1 per cent.

On average this translates to almost £40 a year extra and the investigation found one firm even refused to give a quote.

Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, says: "Driving whilst using a hand-held mobile phone places you at greater risk of having an accident - it slows reactions and you are less able to control the car.

"Insurance companies quite rightly take such offences seriously."

And it's not just mobile phone use that insurance firms are getting strict with: a recent survey by swiftcover.com revealed over a fifth of British motorists are ignorant that insurance pay-outs could be reduced following accidents when smoking or eating behind the wheel too, even if not directly the driver's fault.
