Nationwide and Abbey mortgages top best buy tables

Independent mortgage broker John Charcol has released its latest best-buy tables, with Nationwide and Abbey topping the lists.

Nationwide came out ahead for fixed-mortgage products with its two-year deal. It has a fixed rate of 5.95 per cent, which then goes to a rate of 6.49 per cent after the two-year period.

Customers will also have to pay a fee of £599.

The only product in John Charcol's top four fixed-rate mortgage that is not only available for those requiring a loan-to-value ratio of 75 per cent or less is the Bank of Ireland's 6.49 per cent offer, which is fixed until July 31st 2011.

Abbey topped the list for discount and tracker mortgages with a rate of 6.02 per cent, which is calculated at bank rate plus 0.97 per cent for two years.

Earlier today Abbey reported that five-year fixed-rate mortgages have increased in popularity among borrowers for the third month running.
