AA Insurance: Motorcycle awareness courses could save money and lives

AA Insurance has suggested that taking a motorcycle awareness course could help bikers reduce the cost of their insurance premiums, as well as making them more alert on the road.

Ian Crowder, a spokesperson for the insurer, noted the motorbikes are "generally more risky" than other vehicles, particularly as the driver is for more likely to be injured if they are involved in an accident.

However, he also said that if riders take proper precautions then their chances of being in an accident will be significantly diminished.

Regarding motorcycle awareness courses, he stated: "A bit of caution about the dangers of motorcycling is no bad thing because it enhances your awareness on the road and it will help you to be a little more alert to the fact that you might not be seen immediately by other vehicles."

Some 16,360 motorcyclists were injured on the UK's roads in 1996, according to statistics from the department of transport.
