This represents an eight per cent decrease on the average amount second-hand car buyers planned to spend between September 2007 and February 2008.
Sainsbury's is therefore advising anyone thinking of selling their car to ensure they know the correct market value of their vehicle, so as to achieve the best price.
Steven Baillie, head of Sainsbury's Loans, said: "Our findings show the amount people anticipate spending on second-hand cars is significantly less compared with six months ago, which may be a knock-on effect of people's growing financial uncertainty."
The bank's survey also revealed that 17 per cent of the cars purchased in this six-month period will be financed by a loan.
Earlier this month, Sainsbury's Insurance reported that 1.5 million people have driven without insurance in the last year.
