Legal & General finds savings habits changing

Britain is becoming a nation of better savers, according to a survey by Legal & General.

The firm's MoneyMood poll found six per cent more consumers are managing to save some of their monthly income compared with 12 months ago.

While more people are playing safe with their salaries, the survey also found hype surrounding the credit crunch has not curbed spending too much.

In the single demographic particularly, 60 per cent of those questioned had money left at the end of each month to spend on going out.

Julia Clayworth, Legal & General's wealth management head of marketing, says: "It is reassuring that people's saving habits are gradually changing despite the reported economic downturn and that they are still managing to have some fun as well."

Recent research from Alliance & Leicester agrees Britons are becoming more financially aware, with 55 per cent of respondents revealing rising commodities costs have already prompted them to take action to secure their monetary health in the future.
