Sainsbury's Home Insurance: Brits reach for the sledgehammer

Sainsbury's Home Insurance has found that a fifth of UK homeowners are planning to make major structural changes to their home over the next year, spending an average of £17,361.

Its research showed that some people will spend well above the average, with 19 per cent intending on spending more than £20,000 and one per cent of respondents expecting to spend between £100,000 and £200,000.

The insurer is warning anyone planning on carrying out major structural work in their home to ensure they are fully covered.

Some 33 per cent of the people it questioned who were intending to undertake such work were not aware of the need to inform their home buildings insurer.

Neil Laird, home insurance manager at Sainsbury's Finance, said: "We want to make sure that homeowners are aware that they could be left underinsured or even invalidate their insurance entirely in the event of an incident during or after the works if they have not informed their insurer first."

In related news, Tesco reported earlier today that by not switching home insurance, Britons lost out on £26 million last year.
