Backpackers 'happy to splash their cash'

Lonely Planet, the travel agency and guide book publisher, has suggested that backpackers are willing the "splurge" so they do not miss out on the travelling experience.

Tom Hall, travel editor at the firm, stated that "one of the old adages of going on a big trip is: 'the more money that you have, the better time that you'll have'".

In addition, increasing numbers of backpackers are looking for a more "upmarket" experience and are therefore ensuring they take a healthy sum of money with them, he said.

Mr Hall noted that the trend for people to work while they travel is diminishing as the pressure to return to work or education grows, so most are saving up their funds before they go.

He was commenting on recent figures from InsureandGo that revealed that the average backpacker spends £3,764 on their trip.
