Cost of running a car could hit £3,800 in 2009

Running a car could cost £3,800 annually in 2009 if the price of petrol hits £2.30 a litre as predicted, uSwitch has warned.

The watchdog noted that this will mean the average car is worth only £385 more than the cost of keeping it on the road for a year.

It states that £3,800 is 24 per cent of the typical predicted net salary and 91 per cent of the average car's value.

Currently, British motorists typically pay £65 to fill their tanks, which is 33 per cent more than in 2007.

Ann Robinson, director of consumer Policy at uSwitch.com, said: "We are heading towards a situation where motorists are going to be priced off the roads. As a direct result of these price hikes, motorists are going to be forced to think carefully about when, where or even if they use their cars."
