Seeking advice should be 'top priority' for those facing repossession

Seeking advice should be the top priority for homeowners facing repossession, according to Transact.

Jamie Elliot, a spokesperson for the organisation, recommends that London residents speak to Capitalise, which has 58 debt helplines across the capital, while those in other parts of the UK should seek out their local Citizens' Advice Bureau.

Advisors at these organisations can help people to negotiate with creditors to get a debt written off or agree on payments, he said.

Mr Elliot emphasised: "For those going through repossession, you must get advice and get someone to represent you if you are facing a repossession hearing."

"This really can make all the difference. Don't put your head in the sand," he added.

The number of possession orders in the first quarter of 2008 were 17 per cent higher than at the same time last year, the latest data from the Ministry of Justice shows.
