FairFX.com card offers “gap year on a shoestring”

Gap year students can get better currency exchange rates with a currency card from FairFX.com, the company claims.

FairFX.com says that a student spending $5,000 could save up to £183 by using its currency card rather than getting cash at an airport.

The company also claims prepaid currency cards are safer to use.

Stephen Heath, chief executive of FairFX.com, said parents or travellers could top up the card online.

He added that the chip and pin technology meant prepaid currency cards were difficult to clone, adding that potential losses were limited as nothing can be spent except what is loaded onto the card.

The FairFX.com card is a MasterCard chip and pin prepaid debit card, issued in euros or US dollars.

Recent research by Sainsbury’s found that one in five adults leave buying currency until they get to the airport, missing out on better deals.

Steve Johnson, head of travel money at Sainsbury’s Finance said the company was "surprised" so many people left it so late.

He said that holidaymakers should take advantage of "better exchange rates and commission-free offers at a local supermarket".
