Alcohol, children, DIY and sheer tomfoolery are responsible for Britons’ annual £1.35 billion damage to their homes, according to Tesco.

Some 25 million Brits have accidentally damaged their home or its contents in the last five years, according to the 'Mr Bump Report'.

While alcohol is the cause of £95 million worth of damage, young children cost £136 million, topped by DIY wannabes at £149 million – and those indulging in horseplay cause a quarter of all accidents, costing £325 million.

Those in flatshares were six times more likely to damage their property through drinking too much than those living with a spouse or partner.

A quarter of people have dropped an ornament while 17 per cent damaged an expensive electrical object.

But nearly a third of Brits (29 per cent) have no accidental damage cover for their homes, or any home insurance at all, according to the report.

Paul Baxter of Tesco home insurance advised insuring against accidental damage, noting: "Accidents do happen."

One in ten Britons have had a cooking accident or damaged their kitchen after copying professional techniques shown on television, according to esure home insurance.
