British men 'like Ian Beale with money'

A fifth of UK men liken themselves to Eastenders character Ian Beale, describing themselves as "tight" or "careful" with money, according to a Scottish Widows survey.

While over a third of men would call themselves "diligent" or "thrifty" with their finances, like the fictitious businessman, 17 per cent of women identified with the less careful Honey Mitchell, saying they are "always short of money".

Of women, 15 per cent said they "seem to have one financial crisis after another".

The poll asked people to match their personality, money-wise, to soap characters and celebrities.

Just six per cent of people felt they resembled designer-mad shopaholic Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City or David Beckham.

And just one per cent likened themselves to celebrity charity donors like Angelina Jolie and Elton John.

Mike Hoban, customer and brand marketing director of Scottish Widows, said it was "great that so many men see themselves as financially responsible" but warned against saving money now to splash it all in a few years’ time.

Last week, a survey by financial services group GE Money showed a quarter of Britons worry that their finances are out of control.
