Saga: Older travellers should shop around for insurance

Older British holidaymakers are advised to shop around for the best possible insurance deal as good policies for the over-65s are "not hard to find if you look in the right place".

According to over-50s travel insurance specialist Saga, the older generation of travellers should be "clear and honest" about any pre-existing health conditions when searching for travel cover.

Paul Green, head of Saga Group Communications, suggests that buyers should examine whether policies cover pre-existing conditions rather than simply opting for the cheapest deal, as insurers now have a better understanding and improved systems for rating older travelers.

He explained: "Travel insurance for older people is not hard to find if you look in the right place - Saga, for instance, has no upper age limit - and the oldest person thus far to be covered was a lady celebrating her 100th birthday."

Mr Green forecasts that travel insurers may well raise upper age limits for policies in the future, as the UK population "remains healthier for longer".

A poll by Age Concern conducted in 2007 found that 92 per cent of travel insurance policies impose upper age limits, excluding older people from cover.
