Children’s Mutual: Tooth Fairy still gives children £23.4 million

The Tooth Fairy has been unaffected by the credit crunch and inflation, increasing her generosity by five times the annual inflation rate, the Children's Mutual has found.

A child's tooth now average £1.22, up 16 per cent on last year, according to the Children’s Mutual’s annual Tooth Fairy Inflation Index.

London teeth are most valuable, with almost one in ten children there getting £5 or more for a tooth.

But parents can suffer from "fairy pressure" with 16 per cent feeling compelled to give a tooth's market rate.

David White, chief executive of the Children's Mutual, said the Tooth Fairy could help teach children how to finance.

He said that parents could "stick to their gums and avoid fairy pressure" by encouraging children to save their tooth money.

One user on a discussion forum on www.raisingkids.co.uk, records a child being left £10 for her first lost tooth.

Several parents confirmed the Tooth Fairy left a pound each time, although one parent explained that the first tooth was worth £2 because it was "a special time in their lives".
