London’s poor publish poverty report

A study conducted by people in poverty has produced key findings on how to end the problem.

The "Voices for a Change" project, run by ATD Fourth World and supported by Child Poverty Action Group, involved those suffering poverty in drafting the interview guide, data analysis and helping to formulate recommendations.

Key findings included the need for improved access to services, which were found to be often complicated or untrustworthy.

Low pay and unscrupulous employers were also found to be a problem, with state benefits often insufficient for basic needs.

The report also found that policy makers should not assume that poverty was caused by apathy or neglect.

A third of the participants had acquired new skills to help themselves.

Seamus Neville, one peer researcher, said the project "gives you the confidence to be able to do things for yourself".

Matt Davies, national co-ordinator of ATD Fourth World, said: "With the right conditions poor Londoners can and do move themselves out of poverty."

The Newham Recorder recently reported that more than half the children in the London borough were living in poverty, while the national average is 27 per cent.
