Easy ISA launched by Alliance & Leicester

Alliance & Leicester has launched a new cash ISA, requiring a minimum balance of just £1 and a tax-free interest rate of six per cent gross per year.

The Easy ISA replaces the Direct ISA Issue 4, which is now closed to new business.

It offers telephone and internet banking, with a maximum subscription of £3,600 in a tax year and transfer in ISA funds from other ISA providers (though not from another Alliance & Leicester ISA).

New and existing Alliance & Leicester customers are eligible.

Hetal Parmar, manager for savings at Alliance & Leicester, said the ISA is "just a simple savings account, except that the interest is paid without tax being taken off."

ISA sales have been on the increase in the past year.

Net retail sales fell from £1.1 billion a year ago to £653.3 million in May, newly released figures from the Investment Management Association (IMA) show.

But ISA sales rose £18.3 million to £198.3 million.
