ABTA: People will not cut back on summer holidays

Holidaymakers are not deterred by the credit crunch, the Association of British Travel Agents has said.

Spokesperson Sean Tipton said most people regarded their annual trip away as a necessity, not a luxury, and would cut back on other areas instead.

Calling summer bookings "very healthy", he said going abroad was one way to "escape the current economic gloom".

He added that a family had to be in "extreme financial difficulties" to tell children they would not get a holiday this year.

Research carried out by ebookers.com, reported on Travelmole.co.uk, found that only 12 per cent of respondents believed breaks to be a luxury.

More than half of the 1,003 people polled said it was important or absolutely necessary.

They would rather take lunch to work, use public transport more and give up magazines, DVDs and gym memberships than forego a holiday.

Young families feel the pinch most, with one in ten saying they would consider taking out a loan for a holiday and one-fifth likely to go into overdraft over it.
