Admiral: Car thieves steal anything

A six-foot Power Ranger costume, a pair of knickers and a bag of homework are among the objects people have had stolen from their cars in the last year, according to Admiral.

The most commonly stolen items, not including stereos, are CDs, satnav systems, iPods and mp3 players, jackets, mobile phones and laptops.

Less common but still stolen was a cat flap, disco lights, a wetsuit, dog food, celery, a gazebo, a piggybank, fluffy dice and sandwiches.

Sue Longthorn, managing director of Admiral, said the amount lost was "staggering once you sit down and work out the value of it all."

Admiral calculated that a family consisting of two parents in their 50s and a daughter in her 20s could be carrying items worth over £2,800 in its cars, meaning UK drivers could have around £28 billion in their vehicles.

Most vehicle crime is opportunistic, according to the Home Office.

It recorded nearly 1.7 million vehicle-related thefts in 2006-07.

Security equipment, particularly immobilisers, increases vehicle safety by more than ten times.
