Moneysupermarket.com: One in seven holidaymakers without insurance

One in seven (14 per cent) British holidaymakers never take out travel insurance, according to a poll by price comparison website moneysupermarket.com.

Barely half (53 per cent) buy cover every time they go away, while a quarter cover themselves only for trips outside the UK and nearly one in ten (eight per cent) get insured only for long-haul trips.

Men are more likely than women to avoid insuring themselves on holiday.

Paul Gerrard, head of insurance research at moneysupermarket.com, said that 81 per cent of Britons become ill while on holiday and warned that insurance is "vital" for claiming on things such as cancellation, lost cash and emergency medical treatment.

Those over 65 can suffer discrimination in buying travel insurance, according to website thisismoney.co.uk.

It notes that premiums are typically 60 per cent above the standard rate and may exclude existing medical conditions.

Companies such as Age Concern and Saga specialise in policies for this age group, but other providers may also offer cover.
