Insurancewide.com gives tips for cutting car costs

Insurer comparison website insurancewide.com has offered drivers tips on how to keep their car costs minimal in the face of the credit crunch.

Drivers are advised to slow down, as cars consume 38 per cent more fuel on average at 70 mph than at 50 mph.

Gear changes should be made as soon as necessary, while keeping windows and sunroofs closed will make a car more aerodynamic.

Motorists should also shop around for fuel, as prices can vary, leave unnecessary objects out of the car, keep the oil clean and have the car serviced regularly.

Underinflated tyres also harm fuel consumption, while buying an annual tax disc is cheaper than a six-monthly one.

Speeding tickets add 13 per cent to insurance premiums.

Fraudulent car insurance claims add an estimated £140 to honest people's premiums, according to onlyfinance.com.

The website covers two separate reports by the Motor Insurance Bureau and Association of British Insurers which found that one in twenty drivers do not have valid car insurance, while many others make false claims.
