Sainsbury's: Claim your loyalty points

Most people are not claiming loyalty points rewards on their cards, Sainsbury's has found.

In the last 12 months, only three million people out of 8.19 million who have collected rewards linked to their credit cards have made claims on them, according to the research.

The main reason given is that the financial value of the rewards is too small, as 42 per cent of respondents said.

A further 27 per cent said that redeeming the points takes too long while 24 per cent said it is too difficult.

In addition, 23 per cent did not know how to do it.

Donald MacLeod, head of cards at Sainsbury's, said the credit card industry "has a lot of work to do".

Last month, finance website moneyexpert.com found that about two thirds of adults owned at least one loyalty card.

It reported retailers and travel firms offering freebies in an attempt to make sales during the credit crunch, especially through use of the right card.
