Abbey: Families cut holiday costs

British families are slashing their summer holiday budgets by £173, research from Abbey has shown.

The average cost of a holiday has fallen from £749 in 2007 to £576 now.

Parents plan to cut back on childcare, toys, sports equipment, home entertainment and children's hobbies.

Childcare budgets have gone from £180 to £31 from 2007 to this year.

Anticipated food and fuel costs have risen by 56 per cent.

Callum Gibson, head of Abbey Credit Cards, said the figures show "how British parents are feeling the pinch".

More families are cutting costs by opting for "staycations" in which they switch their annual fortnight away for a time of day trips and short breaks, according to the Times.

A survey by the newspaper found that a third of the public intend to swap a break abroad for a holiday at home.

It also reported that prime minister Gordon Brown and Conservative leader David Cameron are taking their holidays in Britain this year.

Mr Brown, whose Dorset holiday last year lasted only four hours due to the foot and mouth outbreak, is to go to East Anglia, while Mr Cameron will visit Cornwall.
