Swiftcover.com advises teens on parent-free holidays

As many as 100,000 British teenagers could be going on holiday this year without their parents or insurance, according to swiftcover.com.

The insurance provider warned that teenagers can be "one of the most at risk groups" because of their age and new independence, noting that one fifth of Britons admit to not taking out adequate insurance every time they travel.

According to the site, 45 per cent of young people admit drinking too much on their first holiday without parents.

Travel insurance may not cover accidents that happen while a person is drunk.

The Daily Mail recently warned people taking "DIY holidays" rather than package ones to ensure they are properly insured.

Package holidays booked with companies under the Air Travel Organisers Licensing scheme (Atol) or the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) are covered if the airline, hotel or travel company folds before the holiday.

But independent travellers are rarely covered.
