NLA launches tenant check service

The National Landlords Association (NLA) has launched a Tenant Check service to help reduce the risk of taking on unreliable tenants.

Landlords can use the service, which starts from £6, to check a prospective tenant's identity, employment and whether they will be able to pay the rent.

The basic package, which includes checks for bankruptcy and county court judgements, offers "quick results".

A more detailed profile is available within three days.

The NLA claims that it can take up to six months to resolve cases in which tenants fail to pay rent, losing landlords thousands of pounds.

Landlords are also advised by the NLA that energy efficient properties are more attractive to renters.

The organisation noted that such properties have lower fuel bills and are therefore more desirable for "cash-strapped renters".

David Salusbury, chairman of the NLA, said that many landlords are "already investing in energy saving measures in response to a growing market demand for environmentally-friendly properties".
