Gocompare.com: Half of Brits concerned about money

Half of UK consumers are concerned about their finances in the face of soaring fuel and energy prices, a study by price comparison website gocompare.com has found.

A survey of over 1,000 people found 49 per cent saying they were concerned or very concerned about their financial situation for the coming year.

Many people (60 per cent) said reducing their outgoings was their current top financial priority, above saving, moving house, remortgaging and funding a pension.

Younger consumers were the most concerned, with nearly 65 per cent of 16 to 24-year-olds concerned or very concerned, compared to 39 per cent of over 55s.

British Gas prices could increase by 30 per cent in the coming weeks.

Centrica, which owns British Gas, is believed to have ditched plans for a gradual increase.

Gas prices could average about £800 a year for customers, while the average household's annual fuel bill would reach about £1,300.
