Advice given to "recession-proof" family finances

Families should compare phone, internet and mobile tariffs and take dual fuel price options to "recession-proof" themselves, the Sunday Herald advises.

In a series of tips to help families protect themselves against the economic slowdown, the Scottish newspaper suggests getting both gas and electricity from the same supplier and using price comparison websites to find the best internet and phone deals.

Websites www.petrolprices.com and www.mysupermarket.co.uk can help find the cheapest petrol and shopping costs in the local area.

The newspaper suggests the 7.49 per cent Barclays Bank Monthly Savings account and Index-Linked Savings Certificates from National Savings and Investments.

Shareholders should "hang on" as markets have recovered in history and even consider buying cheap options.

The Sunday Herald also warned that credit cards "only really work for short-term borrowing".

Companies are concentrating on energy efficiency for cost-cutting in the credit crunch, according to the Press Association.

It reported a YouGov poll for the Carbon Trust which found that 31 per cent of business leaders are prioritising energy efficiency above redundancies and pay and recruitment freezes to save money.
