British Gas: Energy efficiency could cut bills by £4.6 billion

Energy saving could cut Britain's domestic gas bill by 4.6 billion a year, a new study by British Gas claims.

The Guardian reports the Green Streets trial by the gas supplier, monitored by thinktank the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), found that families involved cut their carbon emissions by a fifth.

Some households halved the amount of gas they used, while families generally cut their energy use by up to 30 per cent.

The trial, which is five months into its year-long duration, offers streets a £30,000 budget for energy efficiency measures such as new boilers and solar panels.

At the end, the best performer will receive £50,000 for energy efficiency on a communal building.

Meanwhile, supermarkets have begun a petrol price war, with names such as Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury's all competing on costs.

Asda cut its price by 3p a litre, triggering a 4p per litre cut by Morrisons and a two-week promotion by Sainsbury's in giving a 5p a litre reduction for people spending at least £50 in its stores.
