Legal & General reported that 42 per cent of people spent between £1 and £1000 on garden equipment or home improvement in June, compared to 32 per cent who spent the same on something outside their normal expenditure.
The MoneyMood survey questioned 34,000 people.
Jonathan Latham, Legal & General's director of wealth customer marketing said that people should still save for long-term goals and pensions.
Meanwhile, investment group LV= found more families are going on a "traditional bucket-and-spade seaside holiday" in Britain this summer as 71 per cent of parents admitted being concerned about their finances.
A majority of adults (58 per cent) are staying in Britain for their holiday this year.
Katherine Hart, corporate social responsibility manager at LV=, said the company is sponsoring a children's safety scheme in Bournemouth.
Under the LV=KidZone initiative, parents write their mobile numbers on wristbands for children to wear while KidZone staff patrol the beaches.
