Halifax launches "market leading" student account

A student account with an interest-free overdraft of £3,000 and reductions in AA membership and card care insurance has been launched by Halifax.

The Halifax Student Account offers the overdraft for up to five years while the account holder is a student and for a year after graduating.

Staying in credit brings gross interest of two per cent as a reward.

Students can also get 25 per cent off AA membership for a year and 20 per cent off card care insurance.

They may withdraw up to £300 a day and have commission free foreign currency exchange and American Express travellers cheques.

Online and telephone banking are also available.

Mike Regnier, head of banking at Halifax, said the account has "real long-term value".

The Independent recently reported the financial benefits of studying in Scotland.

Students from elsewhere in the UK pay £1,775 in tuition fees, compared to £3,145 further south, while the cost of living is also lower than in the rest of Britain.
