Brits 'could save £700 million a year with efficient cold appliances'

Britons could save a collective total of £700 million a year by switching to efficient cold appliances such as fridges and freezers, the Energy Saving Trust (EST) has claimed.

New, more efficient fridge-freezers can cost up to £34 less a year in energy than old, inefficient ones, spokesperson Caroline Rams said.

Ms Rams said that if everyone switched to more efficient cold appliances now, "together we'd save around £700 million every year".

She recommended seeking the EST's Energy Saving Recommended logo when buying new electrical appliances, as it shows which are most efficient and cheapest to run.

Products under the Energy Saving Recommended scheme are "under strict criteria" and guaranteed to be the most energy efficient ones available, costing less and emitting less carbon.

The UK wastes £1 billion worth of energy each year by leaving electrical appliances on standby.

It also spends £1.3 billion a year to power washing machines, dishwashers and tumble dryers.
