Insulation 'lowers energy bills'

Homeowners have been advised to insulate their properties to save on energy bills.

Neil Marshall, chief executive of the National Insulation Association, said that insulating a home could cut £275 off its bills.

"With measures such as cavity, solid wall, loft insulation or draught proofing, the result will be lower fuel bills and a warmer home," he said.

Mr Marshall was speaking after Energywatch found the cost of gas and electricity to have risen by 94 per cent and 60 per cent respectively over the past three years.

According to the Energy Saving Trust (EST), lack of loft insulation could lose homeowners as much as 15 per cent of their heating costs through the roof.

Installing the recommended 270 mm depth of insulation could save around £110 a year, the EST estimates.

It also says that 20 per cent of all heat loss is due to poor ventilation and draughts and recommends draught proofing a home.
