Zopa launches loan service for young people

A new "Young Markets" service has just been launched by online person-to-person lending exchange Zopa.

The service aims to help people aged 20 to 25 obtain unsecured loans.

According to Zopa, many people of this age cannot get loans at competitive rates because their credit history is short, not because it is poor.

Giles Andrews, UK managing director and co-founder of Zopa, said the service was "unique" and that young adults have been "unnecessarily blocked" from competitive loans because of their limited credit history.

Those with clean or limited credit records can apply, subject to Zopa's standard identity checks.

More than £20 million will be wiped off Scottish student debt next month, the Press and Journal recently reported.

The Student Loan Company is dropping interest rates by one per cent for a year.

Student debt in Scotland passed £2 billion for the first time at the end of the last financial year, according to the newspaper.
