Families "will turn to home baking to cut shopping bills"

A new report predicts a boom in the home baking market as families attempt to slash shopping bills.

The report by The Grocer trade magazine, covered in the Telegraph, said that families are prepared to use ready-made mixes for making bread, cakes and biscuits.

Food manufacturers have launched new ranges to cater for the home bakers.

According to The Grocer, home baking is "predicting an uplift in sales as more people try to save a few pounds on their shopping by switching to scratch cooking".

The magazine also said the trend was likely to stay as food technology is to become part of the national curriculum in 2011.

It said that baking product manufacturers are "confident the move will fuel interest in family baking”.

Delia Smith, author of How to Cheat at Cooking, says on her website that home-made baked produce will "cost you less than bought cakes and biscuits and will taste a million times better".
