According to the website, a 17-year-old boy can expect his motor insurance to cost £2841 - almost £1,200 more than a girl of the same age.
Peter Gerrard, head of insurance research at the website, advised taking the Pass Plus course, adding an older driver to the policy and consider buying an older car which may be cheaper to insure.
Insurance costs can also be cut by shopping around, buying online and limiting the mileage.
A car with a smaller engine, which is considered less likely to be driven by boy racers, is also cheaper to insure.
The Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) has just announced a membership deal under which over 200 members of the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) will be enrolled as CII members.
Ashton West, MIB chief executive, said it would "enhance our commitment to first-rate customer service".
