AA: Holiday homeowners should check their insurance

Owners of holiday homes abroad should ensure their insurance covers items left there during the year, the AA has advised.

Ian Crowder of the insurance and breakdown cover provider said this should include carpets, curtains and furniture.

Mr Crowder urged homeowners to use their "common sense" regarding security, noting that if a main window is left open while the occupants leave for the day, "you're not going to get a very sympathetic ear from the insurer".

Asked why one in ten second homeowners are reported by Zurich Private Clients not to have insurance, he said it was "probably inertia and apathy".

Zurich's research also found that a further 11 per cent of holiday homeowners did not know whether or not their insurance was adequate.

According to the findings, the average holiday home contains valuables worth £15,200 and two-thirds of people do not visit more than once every three months.

Moneysupermarket.com reported in March that 40 per cent of property owners in the UK do not have home insurance.
