NS&I: Save £1,000 a year through home-grown veg

Growing one's own vegetables could save up to £1,000 a year, NS&I has claimed.

The savings and investments company, which sponsors the Royal Horticultural Society's Grow Your Own Veg campaign, says that the saving of a daily sandwich purchase could add up significantly.

With rising food prices the biggest upward pressure on the Consumer Prices Index, NS&I says growing your own can be a major saver.

Tim Mack of NS&I said home-grown food "seems to taste even better than usual" and said that even small savings add up over time.

The Telegraph recently reported a soaring increase in the demand for allotments, with 100,000 people in England said to be waiting for one.

Around 200,000 have vanished over the last 30 years due to increases in affluence and convenience food.

Neil Dixon, chairman of the National Allotment Gardens Trust, said councils should do more, such as forming partnerships with local landowners, to provide allotments.
