Travel money tips offered

Abta - The Travel Association has offered money advice to holidaymakers for the summer.

Writing on the BBC website, spokesperson Frances Tuke suggested buying foreign currency online or on the high street before leaving to prevent expensive options at the airport.

She suggested bringing a combination of cash, cards and travellers' cheques, calling the latter "by far the best way to protect yourself against theft".

UK credit cards are covered for foreign transactions of over £100 on goods that are faulty or undelivered, she said, but such cards usually carry levys and handling fees.

She urged holidaymakers to buy insurance and to obtain a European Health Insurance Card in case of accident or illness.

Ms Tuke's advice is particularly important as Tom Hall, travel editor of Lonely Planet, recently said that many Britons see their holidays as "non-negotiable".

He said the late bookings market was "strong".

Mr Hall was unable to say whether people are prepared to cut back on short trips additional to their main holiday but added: "I think the savvy traveller can still…travel cheaply."
