Yorkshire Bank: Saving makes Britons happier

Most Britons feel greater satisfaction when they save up for a purchase than if they buy it spontaneously on borrowed money, research from Yorkshire Bank has found.

The bank's poll of over 2,000 adults found 77 per cent found it more rewarding to save for a high-value item.

In addition, 84 per cent of people get more pleasure from something they saved for than something they bought with borrowed funds

Some 73 per cent said they are more careful with their money now than they were 12 months ago, while half are more likely now to save disposable income before buying something expensive.

Psychological expert Philip Hodson said that delayed gratification "can generate a deeper sense of happiness".

Gary Lumby of Yorkshire Bank said that clothes, shoes and electronic goods are still bought spontaneously with borrowed money.

Despite the satisfaction of thriftiness, Yorkshire Bank is helping remortgagers this month.

It is waiving arrangement fees for new customers remortgaging in August on a range of its fixed, tracker, offset and flexible mortgage products.
