Bupa: How to save £500 a month by keeping healthy

Exercising outdoors, quitting smoking and swapping latte for tap water are three tips offered by private health insurer Bupa for saving money while getting healthy.

Bupa claims its tips can save a person almost £500 a month, while cutting their risk of heart disease, strokes and other ailments.

The insurance provider says quitting a 20-a-day habit will save £170 a month, as well as cutting the chances of a stroke or heart attack.

Ditching full fat latte for free tap water can save £50 a month as well as help you sleep better and manage your weight.

With gym memberships up to £80 a month, taking the stairs or getting off the bus early and walking could also save money, while cycling to work could save up to £150 in public transport fares.

Finally, growing your own fruit and vegetables could save £10 a month as well as providing the physical exertion of gardening.

Last week, the Guardian reported how sales of once-fashionable organic produce were falling, while cheap fruit and vegetables were on the up.

Despite slowing growth, organic food was still expected to outstrip non-organic in sales, the Soil Association said.
