Make your home green 'and save £300 a year'

Households could save nearly £300 a year by taking simple eco-friendly measures, it has been claimed.

Fitting insulation and draught-proofing a house could knock hundreds of pounds off the annual heating bill, according to the Aberdeen Press and Journal.

Patrick McCool, head of energy assessment company Make My Home Green, told the paper that there is "a lot to do in the house" before installing solar panels and wind turbines.

Insulating lofts and walls was one important measure, as well as turning down the thermostat.

Edwin Lloyd, founder of My Greener Home, said the average home is now heated to three degrees warmer than 20 years ago and called for people to wear warmer clothing indoors.

Energy saving light bulbs can also save nearly 80 per cent of bills per bulb, while double glazing or heavy floor-to-ceiling curtains can help heat-proof windows.

Businesses in Teesside are now being urged by eco-experts to reduce their water waste, which is estimated to cost £209 million a year.

Envirowise's new resource efficiency initiative Rippleffect claims to be able to give advice that could save businesses' water and effluent bills by up to 30 per cent, nebusiness.co.uk reports.
