E.ON and Scottish & Southern Energy hike prices

E.ON and Scottish & Southern Energy have become the most recent energy companies to raise their prices.

Scottish & Southern hiked its gas and electricity bills by 29.2 per cent and 19.2 per cent respectively.

E.ON upped its gas by 26 per cent and electricity by 16 per cent.

Graham Bartlett of E.ON said it was "not an easy decision to make" and that the firm had tried to keep costs as low as possible.

Gordon Lishman, director general of Age Concern, said the increases will be "a huge blow to millions of people already wondering just how they're going to pay their bills this winter".

He said a third of pensioner households are likely to be in fuel poverty by the end of the year.

Price comparison and switching website uSwitch.com said that gas and electricity are essentials which have become "a luxury that many can no longer afford".

Spokesperson Ann Robinson urged the government to create a "strategic and regulatory environment" to keep prices affordable.
