Halifax: Pocket money is falling

Pocket money is suffering along with the credit crunch, research from Halifax has shown.

Its annual pocket money survey found that the average amount is now £6.13 a week, compared to £8.01 in 2007.

This demonstrates a shortfall compared to inflation of £3.30.

Parents do, however, still pay for mobiles, iPods and gifts.

Almost a third of children will save up to buy something they want.

But 43 per cent will ask for it as a birthday or Christmas present, while 17 per cent will attempt to use pester power.

The best-paid children are those in London and Scotland, who receive £8.47 and £8.20 respectively, while their counterparts in the east Midlands and the south west are given £4.46 and £4.58.

The price of a tooth has risen by 16 per cent since last year to average £1.22, The Children's Mutual reported earlier this year.

Its annual Tooth Fairy Index found that the fairy has an inflation rate of 258 per cent over the last 25 years, comfortably beating the 218 per cent recorded by petrol.
