Direct Line 'a good option for student insurance'

Direct Line has been advised as a potentially good choice for students looking to insure their home contents while away at university.

According to moneysupermarket.com, Direct Line is one of a number of providers offering students the option of taking out cover under their parents' home contents insurance policies, which could save money.

"Big name insurers such as Direct Line and Lloyds TSB offer parents and students this option and will cover you for up to £5,000 or 15 per cent of the sum insured for contents, whichever is greater," recommended Peter Gerrard, head of insurance research at the site.

The provider advised parents to be aware that any claim made by their offspring will have a direct effect on their own claims history, as well as student-tailored insurance being more appropriate for the needs of people at university.

The advice has been issued after Barclaycard announced that a guide on responsible borrowing is available on its student website.
